Surely there will be a problem happened like this: open a series of utilities, including a graphics program, a series of toolboxes occupying the entire screen, and preventing a clear view. This problem can be solved either with an external monitor or an HP Compaq nw9440 which has a powerful graphics and a screen 17''high resolution and anti-glare.

Not long ago we reviewed 's HP nc8430 . The HP nw9440 can be considered the elder brother dell'HP8430. Like him very much, but it is definitely superior in size and as performance.

The design is simple and elegant. The dark gray area of track-pad is a characteristic of design. For the rest, black and gray are the dominant colors. Not exactly. The power button is silver and its form, together with that of green light are slightly curved.

The bill is good. The materials used are of high quality, for example, magnesium parts (screen and base unit) and special coverage of the pointing device. The surface gives a good feeling and reduces the 'high price of notebooks.

However, the rigidity of the central unit is similar to that of the 15''version, not fully satisfactory, but considering that the laptop is a 17''with a reduced size, the nw9440 can be considered acceptable. Crunches found very few.

The screen is protected by a large amount of magnesium. However, because of its size, the display may have some weakness in the middle. But not reveal any deformation, so it is regarded as sufficiently protected.

The hinges are good for their work. One could only detect a slight play. Both hinges hang precisely keeping the screen firmly closed. Looking closely at the top of the Central Unit, will see the plastic strips at the front of the keyboard. These should provide additional protection against any shocks on the screen closed.

The interfaces are almost all sides of the case, since the extended battery occupies almost the entire back. While the right side is almost identical to the portable 15'', the doors of the left side were unfortunately moved to the front, while the cooling fan has been moved back. The four USB ports are all moved to the front on both sides.

Input Devices

The HP Compaq nw9440 has, like all mobile professionals, a clear headboard and comfortable with large keys and a separate numeric keypad. Accordingly, it is also great for CAD applications that have a number of shortcuts.

As already mentioned, the keys are large, and enter key extends over two lines was necessary, as a space bar long enough. Slightly smaller, but acceptable, are the function keys and directional ones. These are just moved and this facilitates their use.

Typing is characterized by a pressure point clear and precise. In our view the return of the key could be softer, but it is a personal matter. In the area of the keypad you can see a slight decrease of the keyboard.

The Compaq nw9440 also a combination touch pad / track point instead of the mouse. The touch pad as the track point we were convinced. The buttons for both, in particular, are very user-friendly, because of comfort during pressure and comfortable positioning. However, the plastic top of the track point could be made more ergonomic.

On top of the headboard are several quick texts, for example, volume control and a button to launch the Windows calculator!

Instead of the middle mouse button, the laptop has a fingerprint reader.

Color Diagram

The HP Compaq nw9440 has a WUXGA widescreen 16:10 format with a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. This ensures a wide field of view and a great desktop. However, the high screen resolution of 133 DPI makes the fonts very small. Finally, the anti-glare screen allows the eyes less tired.

The maximum brightness detected was 138.4cd / m - a fairly moderate. Due to a drop in brightness in the extreme left, the 'lighting is below average, at 74.0%. Furthermore, the screen has an option to automatically adjust in relation to the brightness of the surrounding environment. We have disabled during our tests.

The color scheme of the screen indicates a clear, but typical deviation curve of the blue. Therefore the colors are warmer.

The screen reaches a remarkable achievement for what concerns the contrast. An extremely low black value 0.3cd / m² involves a maximum v alue of contrast up to 461:1.
The screen reaches the sixth grade in the test Pixperan readability, this shows a reaction medium.

Outdoor work

The matte surface of the screen prevents the presence of annoying reflections, when the laptop is used outdoors. However, the screen brightness is too low, because the contents are a bit 'too dark. However, it should be possible to work outdoors.

The best possible points are different. However, vertically, the screen becomes too dark or light outside of appropriate work area. This reduces the readability of moving from work on account of reduction of contrast. Horizontally, the stability is excellent.

Performance

The model reviewed the Compaq nw9440 (EY314EA) has a CPU Dual Core T2600 2.16 GHz, which provides plenty of power. In addition to model T2700 Dual Core is also a Core 2 Duo T7400 CPU model.

Noisiness

There are several powerful notebook on the market, but is unlikely to succeed in combining high performance and reduced emissions. The HP Compaq nw9440 is one of them. In the absence of activity (no load) is really hard to hear noises, because of the level of just 34.1dB. Therefore, it can be safely used in quiet places. Even when performance is up to the Compaq nw9440 with just 39.5dB is truly amazing.

Overall assessment

HP Compaq nw9440

The 'HP Compaq nw9440 has delighted our editorial staff. We could compare it to a Mercedes S class, which looks elegant and quiet at first glance. But just press the accelerator ...

The bill is good and the materials used, first quality. E 'can only improve the robustness. The location of the interface is awkward considering that the laptop would replace a desktop. If we consider that the laptop is used mostly on a desk with devices constantly connected, the back doors would be more comfortable.

Only a few minor weaknesses in input devices. The headboard is well structured, there is a numeric keypad and the touch pad is easy to use.

The screen should be the main reason to buy this laptop. With a antiglare screen and high resolution is ideal for the daily work of architects and construction engineers. Are nevertheless possible small improvements in brightness and illumination.

The performance for this laptop play. Especially the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500M getting good results. Particularly suitable for 3D CAD applications, performs well even with all the latest games.

It 'hard to believe, but the HP Compaq nw9440 combines high performance and low emissions. Especially the noise has convinced us.

Considering that this is a laptop to replace a desktop, the 'battery life is fair. With an option for the optimization of consumption should be possible to work several hours without power.

Overall, the HP Compaq nw9440 has reached 89% in our evaluation and falls along with the Dell Inspiron 9400 and the Macbook Pro 17''at the top of the first five laptops.
